Home Office revokes care company’s overseas sponsor licence

A Borders care company has had its licence to sponsor overseas care workers revoked by the Home Office.

The Home Office said Support Services 1st Choice Limited had not been compliant with requirements for organisations that hold a sponsor licence and sponsor migrant workers.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The government does not tolerate illegal activity in the labour market and any accusations of illegal employment practices are thoroughly looked into.

“It would be inappropriate to comment while an investigation is ongoing.”

Scottish Care said it did not comment on individual care companies or cases that are part on an ongoing investigation, adding Support Services 1st Choice Limited was not one of its members.

A spokesperson said: “Scottish Care recognises that international staff are a critical part of the delivery of all social care in Scotland. It is critical that those coming to work in Scotland are supported in a manner which is both ethical and legal, and which supports their rights and dignity.

“As an organisation we have worked with Modern Slavery Scotland and other campaign groups to ensure that all those involved in the recruitment and employment of international colleagues are aware of their rights, duties, and obligations. Illegal practice is never acceptable in any circumstances.”

The Home Office has come under increasing pressure following revelations of rising cases of exploitation of overseas care workers.

Support Services 1st Choice Limited was approached for comment.
