Healthcare Homes introduces sound therapy programme

Care provider Healthcare Homes is delivering a sound-based therapy programme in its Mill Lane care home, based in Felixstowe, Suffolk.

The initiative aims to enhance the wellbeing of residents with advanced dementia, particularly those facing mobility and sensory challenges. Caregivers take residents on “immersive sensory journeys”, asking them to visualise scenarios using soothing sounds such as waves crashing and children playing.

The home says one resident found pleasure in visualising a sunny day at the beach with the help of the sounds of waves and laughter, smiling and mimicking sunbathing.

Another resident experienced tranquillity and calmness after a period of agitation, following a guided meditation session including a focus on breathing techniques.

“Supporting meaningful engagement for residents living with advanced dementia is so important for wellbeing, however, it is complex,” said Suzanne Brindley, manager at Mill Lane. “The team’s work with guided meditation and visualisation is a joy to watch. Responses from residents, however small, are proof that these expressive and relaxing interactions are taking place. It is a reward for staff who put so much effort into this exchange.”
