Hampshire care charity marks 40th anniversary with time capsule

Hampshire-based charity The Brendoncare Foundation will bury a time capsule in the grounds of one of its care homes to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Brendoncare, which runs care homes, extra care housing and a range of communities and clubs, was established on 14 February 1984.

The charity aims to fill a time capsule with photographs, stories and poems that reflect the celebrations and activities taking place in its care homes and community clubs throughout the year. After 12 months the time capsule will be buried in the grounds of Brendoncare Otterbourne Hill near Winchester.

Brendoncare’s care homes and network of community clubs are holding parties to mark the anniversary which falls on Valentine’s Day. Celebrations include farmyard animals visiting Brendoncare St Giles View and a hearts-themed party at Brendoncare Alton care home.

Brendoncare is also releasing a cover version of Stevie Wonder’s I Just Called to Say I Love You. The video and recording has been made by residents, colleagues, volunteers and club members.

The Brendoncare Foundation was established by British Medical Association chair and Winchester GP Sir Ronald Gibson, who believed older people should not have to move to a different care home if their health or mobility declined. Brendoncare’s seven care homes offer a range of care comprising residential, nursing, dementia, end of life and respite.

Marianne Wanstall, Brendoncare chief executive, said: “This is a significant milestone in Brendoncare’s continuing work in providing care homes and a community services that enhance the quality of older people’s lives. This includes constantly finding new, innovative ways to meet their ever-changing needs.”

She added: “We also continue to ensure that the principles on which Brendoncare were founded are still central to our work today and in the future. This includes our Care for Life promise that ensures that when we welcome a permanent resident into one of our care homes, they will never be asked to leave due to lack of funds.”
