Contractor appointed for state-of-the-art care facility
Stockport Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority has appointed a contractor to build a multi-generational residential community which will include a state-of-the-art care scheme.
Rowlinson has been appointed as contractor to build St Thomas’ Gardens, which will include an 82-bed intermediate care scheme, called the Academy of Living.
The Academy. located in Stockport town centre, will support people transitioning between hospital and home. The community will also include affordable housing with a mix of shared ownership and social rent.
The inclusion of homes, healthcare, and community spaces is designed to bring generations together.
Colin Macalister, cabinet member for economy and regeneration, said: “The new care facility will provide the right support for those transitioning between hospital and home and will be at the heart of this new community.”
The St Thomas’ Hospital site was originally built in 1841 as a workhouse and infirmary. It was later used as an NHS facility until 2004. Construction is expected to start this month.
