Care provider launches sustainability initiative

Care home provider Elmfield Care is launching an initiative to eliminate single-use plastic across its three facilities.

The Plastic Solution programme eliminates the use of single-use plastic containers for housekeeping, laundry, and kitchen commercial cleaning products.

Until now the three Elmfield Care homes in Chippenham, Salisbury, and Lydney generated an estimated 500 to 600 single-use plastic containers each year, which contributed to landfill waste or incineration.

The Plastic Solution programme replaces single-use options with containers with special air-sealed valve caps replace single-use options. Once emptied, these containers are collected and refilled at a dedicated filling plant, minimising plastic waste.

Elmfield Care is the first care home group in the country to adopt this system.

“The Plastic Solution program perfectly aligns with Elmfield Care’s commitment to sustainability,” said Sharon Kawonga, marketing co-ordinator at Elmfield Care. “This programme not only benefits the environment but also offers significant operational advantages.”

Chris Tapp, The Plastic Solution co-founder, said: “We are delighted to partner with Elmfield Care, being the first care home group to adopt our unique zero plastic waste programme. Their commitment to driving this unique initiative across their estate is an admirable example to the wider care sector.”
