Care home introduces family meal initiative

Athena care home Ashlynn Grange in Peterborough has introduced a family meal initiative to create a welcoming environment for staff and celebrate diversity.

Head chef Gavin Maram has driven the initiative, which aims to foster a sense of community and raise funds for charity.

“The idea behind these family meals is simple – we’re bringing people together through the universal experience of sharing food, creating a dining experience that makes everyone feel at home,” said Maram, who was inspired by the diverse backgrounds of the team at Ashlynn Grange where many workers come from overseas.

The meals take place every other Sunday, with dishes chosen by colleagues and aiming to reflect the diversity of the team. These meals will also coincide with religious and cultural festivals, allowing everyone to celebrate and learn about each other’s traditions.

Dishes so far have included lamb biryani and Nepalese momo dumplings. “These meals offer more than just a taste of home; they are a fun event that fosters a family atmosphere and provides a chance for all of our team to chat and bond around the meal table,” said Maram, who is himself from South Africa.

“The sense of camaraderie that develops from these shared experiences is invaluable, creating a synergy that enhances the working environment at Ashlynn Grange.”

Team members who enjoy the meal are asked to donate a small sum of money to charity.
