Advinia cites lack of funding in closing 30-bed care home unit

Advinia Health Care has announced it is closing a 30-bed unit of its Mill View Care Home in Bolton due to a lack of funding.

The Dove unit is one of five 30 bed units offering residential, dementia and/or nursing care at the care home, which was rated Requires Improvement following an inspection by the CQC in August.

A spokesperson for the care home said: “The closure of Dove unit is regrettable, however, due to rising costs, and despite our best efforts to secure more funding from the local authority, which have not been forthcoming, we have taken the decision to close the unit.

“We anticipate being able to retain many of the residents effected and are working closely with the local authority to ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible.

“Sadly, it is unfortunate that we find ourselves having to take such measures but in the absence of the appropriate funding we have been left with no choice. We remain committed to the home and the local community in the long term.”

A Bolton Council spokesperson said: “We recognise that the announcement regarding Mill View Care Home will result in a great deal of uncertainty for the home’s residents, their relatives and the staff.

Advinia Health Care reassures us that this only affects one unit in the home, which is due to rising costs and difficulties in recruiting and retaining nursing staff.  However, they state the rest of the home will continue to operate as normal.

“We have a fixed tariff for care placements which is comparable with other local authorities and have distributed government grants fairly and appropriately.

“In 2023/24, Bolton Council provided the care sector significant uplifts in funding, 13.96% for standard residential care placements and 22.96% for nursing placements. In addition, we continue to meet with providers that struggle to understand and support them to continue providing good quality care and to improve their workforce challenges.

“We’re committed to ensuring high quality care and the safety for residents, and as such we are working with the residents affected and their families, and partner organisations to identify appropriate alternative arrangements.”
