Care provider makes vegetarian pledge

Luxury care provider Hamberley Care Homes has signed up for an initiative to ensure the dietary choices of vegetarian and vegan residents living with memory loss are never neglected.

The provider has signed up to charity Vegetarian for Life‘s Memory Care Pledge to ensure that older people who have chosen a meat-free lifestyle are never served animal products. The initiative supports individuals living with memory loss and cognitive impairment who are vegetarian and vegan.

Hamberley’s head of dementia David Moore said: “It is something that many people may worry about – will I still be served a vegetarian meal even if I have dementia?”

He added: “We want to be sure that all our residents’ wishes are respected, and we will ensure that our catering and caring teams are aware and emphasising the incredible plant-based menus we offer. By supporting this pledge, Hamberley Care Homes are showing our commitment to respecting each resident’s beliefs and preferences when it comes to pescatarian, vegetarian or vegan diets.”

Hamberley has also signed up to be a Vegetarian for Life UK List member – committed to providing the best possible catering for vegetarian and vegan residents.

Vegetarian for Life undertakes outreach work with chefs visiting homes and provides training to help inspire catering teams and demonstrate plant-based food. The organisation also runs an awards scheme that gives carers and homes the opportunity to showcase their plant-based cuisine.
