Wes Streeting pledges new deal for care workers

Shadow health secretary, Wes Streeting, has promised a new deal for care workers at the Labour party conference.

Speaking at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool yesterday, Streeting said a Labour government would “grip the immediate crisis in social care, starting with the workforce”.

He said he would work with former care worker, deputy prime minister, Angel Rayner, to deliver a new deal for care workers.

Streeting said the new deal would include: “A workforce plan to address recruitment and retention, the professional status these remarkable people deserve, and the first ever Fair Pay Agreement for care professionals.”

He said the new deal would be the “first step” in a 10-year plan for a National Care Service.

In a wide-ranging speech covering health and social care, the shadow cabinet member also warned the NHS must “modernise or die”.

Speaking at a local government rally earlier at the conference on Sunday, Streeting said a National Care Service would be delivered in partnership with local government.

He also reaffirmed Labour’s pledge to clamp down on “exploitative” private equity owners of care homes.

“With a Labour government their time will be up,” he warned.
