Ceredigion Council is considering plans to take over a Methodist Home care home after it fell into financial trouble.

Hafan y Waun in Aberystwyth is one of 10 care homes the MHA announced it was withdrawing from in May.

At a cabinet meeting on 4 July, Ceredigion Council will consider proposals to take over the 90-bed home, which MHA has leased from them since January 2007.

Councillor Alun Williams noted admissions to the home had been restricted to just over 50 due to staffing problems. A regional manager is currently in charge of the service following the registered manager’s resignation.

In his cabinet report, Williams said: “The option of bringing the provision over to council ownership through a managed leasehold transfer has therefore started to be explored. This approach would ensure that the care home continues to operate, Ceredigion jobs are protected as far as possible and a valuable resource continues to be provided to the county and our communities.

“It would give certainty to the existing residents and their families and would prevent the considerable upheaval and logistical challenge of moving and placing over 50 individuals in new care homes under the possible alternative scenario of a potential home closure.”

Dan Ryan, chief operating officer at MHA, said: “We have been working closely with Ceredigion County Council on a possible transfer of Hafan y Waun care home in Aberystwyth to the management of the local authority.

“It is pleasing to see the council’s cabinet being recommended to accept the transfer.

“MHA has withdrawn from 10 care homes across England and Wales, including Hafan y Waun, following a strategic review of its services. As Hafan y Waun’s lease is owned by Ceredigion CC, approaching the council to take over the running of the home was our natural first consideration.”
