Tributes have been paid to a long-serving care home manager who has retired after 11 years of service.

Southeast care group Nellsar bid an emotional farewell to one of its most loved and dedicated members of staff, Karen Wilkins, who has spent a decade building “wonderful memories” and a long-lasting legacy at the family-run community.

Reflecting on her 11-year tenure at Lukestone Care Centre, Karen said: “It has been an amazing decade. I’ve worked with numerous staff and have watched people blossom. Some of my team members began working with little to no care experience, but they grew and became more confident and a real asset to the team. My management style is firm but fair, I know some would say I am too lenient, but I believe in giving people a chance. I have nothing but respect for my team and will continue to support them throughout my retirement.”

Wilkins plans to enjoy her retirement by spending some well-deserved time with her 11 grandchildren, who fill her with immense pride.

Martin Barrett, managing director at Nellsar, described Wilkins as a “role model who is adored by both staff and residents”. He added that she will always be remembered for her leadership and meticulous ability to manage a team.

Wilkins concluded: “I’m extremely grateful and proud to have been a nurse all these years and to have made a real difference to several lives. I’ve never regretted my career choice and am immensely humbled that my daughter chose to follow in my footsteps. I’ve achieved a lifetime ambition that I set when I was 13 years old. I’m going to miss everyone so much.”
