Support worker struck off for borrowing £90 from care home resident

A care home support worker has been struck off for borrowing £90 from a resident.

A Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) hearing found evidence Brenda Gilliland had borrowed money from a service user and failed to repay the full amount while employed by Abbotsford Care on or around 9 July 2022.

In its notice of decision to Gilliland, the SSSC said: “Service users have the right to expect that they will be treated with dignity and respect and protected from harm by social service workers in whom they and the public place have placed their trust and confidence.

“Borrowing money from a vulnerable service user constitutes financial abuse of a service user, a breach of professional boundaries, and an abuse of your position. Your behaviour falls below the standards expected and calls into question your suitability to work in social services as it shows you are willing to place service users at risk of harm.”

The hearing panel concluded there was a “risk of repetition” given the “limited insight” Gilliland provided to her employer, adding: “You were experienced in your role when the behaviour occurred and ought to have been fully aware of your responsibilities.”

The notice came into effect on 8 April 2023.
