Support worker sanctioned for care home abuse

A care home support worker has been issued with a three-year warning on their registration for abusing a resident.

Alexander Mair was issued with the sanction for an incident which took place at HC-One’s Douglas View Care Home in Hamilton on 12 November 2020.

A Scottish Social Services Council hearing found Mair had said in response to a colleague who had told them they had been slapped by a service user: “did you not hit him back?”.

Mair was also found to have pinched the service user’s nose and pointed his finger in his face, commenting: “he can’t be hitting people, I had to put him in his place”.

A spokesperson for Douglas View said: “As the Kind Care Company, we treat all our residents with the utmost respect. We are clear that this type of behaviour is unacceptable, and does not align with our core values and expectations.

“When this incident occurred three years ago, we took immediate action to suspend Mr Mair and remove him from the home. We referred the matter to the SSSC ourselves, and have worked closely with them throughout their investigations.

“We will always uphold the high standards of kindness which everyone living in our home deserves, and we will always act in their best interests.”
