A Grantham care home marked Dignity Action Day this week by launching a campaign to create special bonds between staff and residents.

Dignity Action Day (1 February) is a national awareness day for health and social care workers and members of the public to celebrate the right to dignity of people who use care services.

As part of the Companion Campaign launched by The Orders of St John Care Trust’s Gregory House, each staff member will become a companion to a resident in order to create a special bond while also upholding person centred care.

The care home also hosted a series of events on the day to incorporate the theme for this year, Dancing for Dignity. Residents and employees took part in a series of activities designed to bring a smile to everyone’s faces, while demonstrating the important role that everyone must play in treating those in care with respect and dignity.

Anna Lewkowicz, Gregory House home manager, said: “We’re delighted to support Dignity Action Day again this year. Celebrating through the art of dance was lots of fun.

“We strive to ensure that everyone at Gregory House gets to know all our residents, and the Companion Campaign will further enhance this on a personal level. At Gregory House we treat residents as individuals and offer them choice, control and a sense of purpose throughout their daily lives.”

Ashleigh Pinder, activities coordinator and the home’s Dignity Champion, said “It’s great that days like Dignity Action Day have been created to raise awareness of the significance of upholding people’s rights to dignity in particular in a health and social care setting.”
