Ombudsman finds fault with care home’s medication administration and communication

A Staffordshire care home has agreed to pay a ‘symbolic sum’ and apologise to the daughter of a resident after her complaint was upheld by the Local Government & Social Care Ombudsman.

Mrs B complained on behalf of her father, Mr C, about his care at Avery Healthcare’s Darwin Court in Lichfield.

Mr C, who moved into the home in August 2021, was not able to self-medicate due to Alzheimer’s disease.

It was agreed that all his medications should be administered and his family requested to be consulted on any changes to his care plan.

The Ombudsman found fault with the administration and renewal of Mr C’s prescription of medication, with the home not having informed the family of a seizure at the time it occurred and with its failure to set up fortnightly calls during Covid-19.

The home agreed to write to Ms B to apologise and to acknowledge the fault and pay £200 as a symbolic amount for the distress caused.

A spokesperson for Avery Healthcare said: “The Darwin Court Care Home team have already made service improvements as a result of the upheld complaint. We will continue to provide the very best care and support to our residents and are sorry that the communication and care provided on this occasion fell short of expectations.”
