Ombudsman finds care home provided ‘poor care’ for resident who suffered repeated falls

The Local Government & Social Care Ombudsman has found “some evidence” that the deterioration of an elderly man during a respite stay at a care home was “due to poor care and treatment”.

Avery Healthcare was ordered to pay £1,500 and issue an apology to the family of the man, referred to as Mr X, who suffered at least 10 falls and developed a pressure sore during his stay at the home.

Mr X left the home on 8 December and has sadly since passed away. His daughter complained that he was never able to return to his home after leaving it for respite.

The Ombudsman instructed Avery to within one month take steps to review the way in which staff responds to the changing needs of residents and review its fall policy.

The provider was also told remind staff of the requirement of recording accurate information accurately, including fluid intake and output, and inform the Ombudsman of steps taken to improve record keeping.

An Avery spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the late Mr X at this time. We are sorry that the care and treatment provided on this occasion fell short of expectations causing additional distress.

“The care home team is dedicated to providing the very best care and support to residents that reside with them. We have listened to the recommendations from the Ombudsman and are proactively making immediate changes to improve resident experience and prevent future failings.”
