Luxury care home provider Oakland Care has been recognised for its industry leading sustainability efforts by winning the Green Organisation’s Green World Environment Award.

Oakland Care will be presented with their trophy and certificate at a glittering presentation ceremony in Miami, US in April.

Chief executive at Oakland Care, Joanne Balmer BEM, said: “This is an incredible achievement, and I am extremely proud that we have attained this global award for our environmental and sustainability efforts. It is testament to all the hard work and commitment across Oakland Care to work as one towards this pivotal worldwide objective.

“To become the first and only care home provider to have ever achieved the accolade is very special, particularly given that we are first to do so on an international stage. We strive to inspire others within our sector to push ahead with their own journey and contribute to the fight against climate change. Our sector can truly be a positive force as we collectively work to achieve a net zero society.”

Oakland Care have also been invited to become Green World Ambassadors and will have their winning entry paper published in ‘The Green Book’, the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice. This will allow others around the world to follow their example and learn from their sustainability successes.

In the last 12 months, Oakland retained their status as the only carbon neutral care group in the UK for a second year running and achieved Level 3 certification by Green Mark, the highest grade awarded by the sustainability specialist.

Numerous inclusive and effective green initiatives have also been introduced by the senior leadership team, which have brought team members and residents together for collaborative causes that create long-lasting impact.

This culminated in the successful launch of a new strategy promoting green initiatives across their eight care homes in September.

Momentum has been maintained into 2023, with a collective tree planting initiative undertaken in January, which helped Oakland Care take a major step towards their pledge of planting 1,000 trees per year.
