We took a look at Anavo Group’s recently launched Surbitonian Gardens during an official launch open day in September.

Surbitonian Gardens embodies Anavo’s ethos of providing care home environments that are embedded in the community. Located just off the bustling Ewell Road in Surbiton, the care home has good access to local shops and restaurants so that residents can still feel very much part of the world around them.

Christine Valentine-Bunce, operations and commissioning director, said:
“Our vision is an inside-out home that is part of the community and which offers space for the community to enjoy. Residents in care should not be tucked away but should continue to be part of the community and have it be part of their lives.”

Home manager Thomasina Browne, who provided Caring Times with a tour of the impressive building, said: “Surbitonian Gardens is all about community and partnership working.”

Browne pointed out how the service’s impressive amenities are set to become a powerful hub resource for local community groups, highlighting the ‘Anavo Club Rooms’ which will be used for GP meetings and community gatherings such as book clubs.

The home is forging strong links with the local library and plans regular visits to church services, as well as bringing these in for residents not able to go out.

Residents are also able to host friends and families in the private dining room at no additional cost with the service, among other amenities,
including a barber shop and hairdresser, incorporated into inclusive fees starting at £1,450 a week.

Visiting children and families are also made to feel at home with access to a multi-generational games room that includes interactive screen games and an air hockey table.

In the making since 2018, the care home was built by the local council on the site of a former care home with Anavo Group being brought in to
manage and operate the home on a 35- year lease.

Surbitonian Gardens has been designed on a mixed needs community model with five, 16-strong communities set over three floors. Residents have good access to outdoor space in the form of secure balconies and a sensory garden.

The home is also brimming with the latest cutting-edge technology in order to provide maximum support for residents, boasting fully integrated digital care monitoring, nurse call and acoustic monitoring systems.

A special IT Hub offers access to interactive screens to help stimulate cognitive function, while, at the time of visiting, the home was preparing for delivery of a set of virtual reality headsets for calming and reminiscent activities. Elsewhere, overhead hoists are fitted in some rooms to aid getting in and out of bed.

Residents are also able to customise their rooms with designs of their choice.

“It’s all about creating a feeling of home from home,” Browne told us.

With its combination of an experienced and dedicated leadership team and cutting-edge facilities, Surbitonian Gardens looks well-set to be a highly sought after home as well as valuable community resource for years to come.
