Drug dealing and weapons found at Dumbarton care home

Residents dealt in illicit drugs and stored weapons in their rooms at a Dumbarton care home rated Weak by the Care Inspectorate.

The shocking revelations came in a November inspection of Meallmore’s Alderwood House which provides care to adults enduring or recovering from a mental disorder.

The report details “numerous incidences” of residents being threatened by other residents.

In addition, one resident was known to have been selling illicit drugs to other residents. Weapons were also found in people’s rooms.

A letter of serious concern was issued to Meallmore on 27 October with requirements to put risk assessments in place as a matter of priority.

The care home had met with the requirements when inspectors returned to the care home on 31 October.

The door code to the service had been changed to increase residents security and inspectors were assured by the new management team that the environment had been effectively risk assessed.

A spokesperson for Alderwood House said: “We take the report from the Care Inspectorate incredibly seriously and we are fully focused on ensuring everyone at Alderwood House feels safe and receives the highest standards of personalised, quality care and support.

“I can assure friends and family of loved ones at Alderwood that we have zero tolerance towards any form of illegal drug activity and weapons on our premises. We have brought in a new management team and are working alongside the Health & Social Care Partnership and local multi-disciplinary partners to address the areas identified in the report. We have already taken several steps to immediately address these issues. The safety, comfort and wellbeing of our residents is our absolute priority.”
