Council awards £30,000 for abuse of gay care home resident

Lambeth Council has awarded £30,000 to the partner of a care home resident who suffered homophobic abuse.

Noel Glynn, who sadly died before receiving the payment, suffered bruising across his body and a cigarette burn to the back of his hand as a result of abuse from care home staff in 2018.

His civil partner, Ted Brown, is expected to receive the payment through the probate process.

The news came as London-based charity Compassion in Care published a report into LGBTQ abuse in care settings.

Commenting on Mr Glynn, report author Eileen Chubb, said: “It’s absolutely horrendous. The whole care system failed Noel all the way through. Things need to change radically.”

Chubb called for more thorough vetting of carers’ views on LGBT+ during the interview process highlighting that being gay is seen as a crime in some countries.

“Carers have the power to make a person’s life a misery,” Chubb told us. “I would like to see  abuse for being gay recognised as a specific crime.”

A Lambeth Council spokesperson said: “The council took responsibility for Mr Glynn in 2018 after he was placed in a care setting in Croydon following a spell in hospital. When allegations of abuse were made they were fully investigated by Croydon Council as the host authority, and the outcome was shared with the police for follow up action.

“In agreement with Mr Glynn, the council supported his move to more suitable accommodation in 2019. We are in contact with Mr Brown to keep him updated on this case and are sorry for the experiences he and Mr Glynn had of care services.

“Since 2022 Lambeth Council has been working with care home providers and additionally the charities Opening Doors, Lambeth Links and Age UK on a programme to better respond to the needs of older LGBTQ+ people receiving social care services.

“These organisations are helping us develop new tools and training programmes to better address these needs, and to ensure there’s no incidents like this at Lambeth care homes.”
