Care provider sanctioned for poor record keeping after falls complaint

A Sunderland care home has been sanctioned for poor record keeping and allowing people to wander into a resident’s room following a falls complaint to the ombudsman.

Four Seasons’ Maple Lodge Care Home and Sunderland City Council agreed to apologise and pay compensation of £500 and £400, respectively, following a complaint from the family of a resident who fell over 17 times between November 2022 and March 2023.

The Ombudsman found little evidence the home had carried out regular exercises with the resident, failed to record his likes and dislikes and its attempts to involve him in activities.

The home was also found to have missed an opportunity to review the resident’s capacity to decide to keep his door open after fellow residents wandered into his room.

A spokesperson for Four Seasons Health Care said: “We have apologised to Mrs X and addressed the areas noted in the report. The Ombudsman has been provided with evidence that we have complied with the actions required within the given timeframe. The safety and wellbeing of residents and colleagues in our homes remain our first priority.”

A spokesman for Sunderland City Council said: “We have noted the ombudsman’s actions and are implementing them.”
