Care homes recreate movie posters to celebrate Oscars

Two Bristol care homes have celebrated the 2023 Oscars by recreating iconic movie posters.

Residents at Hamberley Care Homes’ Lovell Place and Meryton Place worked with staff to recreate their favourite film posters, selecting costumes, props and poses to match the originals.

The activity, which was run by later living marketplace Lottie, included recreations of films such as Rocky, the Sound of Music, Bohemian Rhapsody and James Bond. Marina, aged 88, teamed up with her daughter and granddaughter to pose as Charlie’s Angels, the Sound of Music starred 92-year-old Jean, and 76-year-old Roger became Rocky Balboa.

Both homes hosted movie nights in their on-site cinemas to lead up to the activity. The posters will be displayed in the care homes,  and both plan a series of projects throughout the year to showcase the creative talents of their residents and challenge misconceptions about aging.

Selina Adams, wellbeing co-ordinator at Lovell Place Care Home, said: “All our residents had a fabulous time recreating these iconic film posters. It brought back so many memories of watching these films when they were younger, and it was an absolute pleasure to see them recreate them in their own unique way.”

She added: “We spoke to every resident who took part about their experiences of growing up with the cinema, and what their favourite films meant to them. It was incredible to hear their experiences.”

Will Donnelly, Lottie co-founder, said: “Age really is just a number, and we hope that this project will help to change negative attitudes towards older people, as they are just as important as everyone else.”

The 95th Oscars ceremony took place on 12 March 2023.
