Care home transforms Covid pod into café

Handford House in Ipswich has transformed a visiting pod used during the pandemic into a café for residents.

The creation of Ray’s Café was funded by a donation from the family of a resident. Fully equipped with heating and electricity, it will be used as a venue for activities, meetings with friends and relatives or just for residents who may want to get away from the main house for a cup of tea. The café was renovated by the Handford House team, and has a sign which reads “Ray’s Café – Refreshments provided, just bring love and laughter.”

Handford House deputy manager Naomi Bender said: “Earlier this year we were advised of some money being donated by the family of one of our residents – her brother Ray had just passed away and the family wanted to make donations to the home in his memory.”

Ray’s Café had two opening ceremonies, one with Ray’s family and a grand opening during the Hawaiian-themed Handford House summer fete.

The 52-bedroom Handford House is part of the Healthcare Homes family of 48 care homes and is rated Good overall by the Care Quality Commission.
