Care home residents explore Kellie Castle

Residents from Willow House Care Home in Fife explored the magic of Kellie Castle on a trip to the historic monument.

The fairytale stone towers and scent of old roses reminded one resident of one of her favourite childhood books Alice in Wonderland, which inspired her lifelong love of gardening.

Flora Fotheringham, 94, said: “The castle is magnificent, wandering around the lawns I imagined the Queen of Hearts playing croquet with a flamingo. There are secrets behind every door.”

The great hall of Kellie Castle houses an illusory feature with two mirrors either side of the west window. Designed by the architect Sir Robert Lorimer, it creates an effect where your reflection stays the same size no matter how far away you stand.

Willow House, part of the Holmes Care Group, organises regular activities and adventures to provide residents with independence and enable them to live happy and healthy lives

Bev Rann, deputy manager at Willow House, said: “The residents had a fantastic day at Kellie Castle, it was a pleasure to hear them reminisce about the childhood stories they love.”
