BREAKING NEWS: Britain welcomes new PM Keir Starmer as Labour wins election
Labour Leader Keir Starmer has succeeded in becoming UK Prime Minister as the 2024 General Election comes to a close.
Despite the disbelief of some Tory loyalists, the pre-election polls turned out to be accurate, as the Labour Party is on track to win its biggest ever majority.
Today marks a day of change for the British public as Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party hands the reins to Starmer and a dominant Labour Party.
The votes were counted overnight, with only a handful of seats still to be announced at the time of writing.
Labour looks set to take a record 412 seats – 211 more than at the 2019 election – while the Conservatives are down to only 121 – 250 fewer than five years ago.
Elsewhere, the Liberal Democrats have secured a healthy 71 seats – a massive gain of over 60 seats – while the SNP drop from 47 to only nine. Meanwhile, the Greens and Plaid Cymru made small gains.
According to the BBC, this is the second lowest voter turnout since 1885, while, in terms of vote share, Labour only gained 2% over 2019, with the Tories dropping a significant 20%.
The incoming PM said, according to the Guardian: “It feels good, I have to be honest. Four and a half years of work, changing the party. This is what it is for. A changed Labour party, ready to serve our country, ready to restore Britain to the service of working people.”
Meanwhile, Conservative Party leader and outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the loss “sobering” and said: “To the many good, hard-working Conservative candidates who lost tonight, despite their tireless efforts, their local records and delivery, and their dedication to their communities. I am sorry.”
