Specialist sensory impairment care home opens in Norwich
Black Swan Care Group has opened its doors to a recently refurbished care home that specialises in sensory impairment.
Thomas Tawell House, which provides care and support for up to 37 older people, specialises in supporting those with sensory impairment, specifically those who have a sight impairment.
The home was named after local ironmonger, Thomas Tawell (1763-1820) who established an institute for the blind in Norwich.
Ellie Johnson, manager at Thomas Tawell House, said: “Our home is in such a lovely position in Norwich. Many people don’t realise we’re here, but when they come to see us, they see what a lovely setting it is and what we have to offer. We’re planning on lots of events and activities to welcome people to visit us and find out how we can support them with their short term or longer term care needs.”
Black Swan has invested heavily into an extensive refurbishment programme at the home, which was run by Vision Norfolk until late 2022.
Refurbishment includes renovation of the bedrooms and living areas to create bright, inviting and comfortable spaces. Specialist flooring and colourways are used in the home to support residents with sight impairments, which helps them in finding their way around the home. Outside is a private, welcoming, accessible garden area designed to promote a sensory experience for the residents to enjoy.
