Welsh health minister Eluned Morgan to become country’s first female leader
Wales looks set to have its first female First Minister, as current health minister Eluned Morgan has been tipped to replace Vaughn Gething.
Gething announced he would step down as First Minister last week after only four months in the position. He followed the longer-serving Mark Drakeford, making Morgan the third Welsh First Minister this year.
Morgan was named leader of Welsh Labour this week as Gething’s imminent resignation became a reality. She ran unopposed.
The BBC quoted Prime Minister Keir Starmer as saying: “Eluned’s election as Welsh Labour leader and candidacy for First Minister is fantastic news for Wales and for the Labour Party.
“Eluned brings with her a wealth of experience and track-record of delivery, and as the first woman to lead Welsh Labour, she is already making history.”
Morgan has been health minister for Wales since 2021.
