Resident dies following fire at independent living scheme

A resident has died and another has been taken to hospital following a fire at a independent living scheme in Northwest London.

A number of residents were evacuated from One Housing’s Esther Randall Court in Little Albany Street after emergency services arrived to tackle the blaze at 7.25am on Thursday.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 7.25am on Thursday, January 5 to reports of a fire at Little Albany Street, NW1.

“Officers, London Fire Brigade, London’s Air Ambulance and London Ambulance Service attended.

“The address is a multi-occupancy care facility. A number of residents were evacuated.

“Two men, both aged, 83, were taken to hospital.

“One of the men later died. His next of kin have been informed.

“The other man remains in hospital; his condition is not life-threatening or life-changing.

“The circumstances, following police investigation, are not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A spokesperson from One Housing said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our customers at Esther Randall Court, our independent living scheme for over 55s in Camden, following a fire which took place in his flat on Thursday 5 January 2023.

“Our sincere condolences are with his family and friends. We are offering support to our other customers and staff at this difficult time.

“Our team were onsite when the fire alarm triggered, reacting quickly to support customers and assist the London Fire Brigade who attended the scene within five minutes of the alert.

“No other areas of the building have been affected and the scheme remains operational.

“We will continue to work with the emergency services as they carry out their investigations into the cause of the fire.”
