Guidance on restraint

A University lecturer and nurse who has spent his career caring for people with learning disabilities has co-written guidance on how to minimise the use of restraint on distressed individuals.

James Ridley, a senior lecturer in Pre-registration Nursing (Learning Disability) at Edge Hill University has developed the guidance with colleagues involved in the Restraint Reduction Network.

By putting human rights at the heart of the guidance, its hoped that individuals, staff, carers and family members will feel better informed about how to meet the needs of the people they’re supporting without resorting to restraint.

“Having worked for more than 25 years in the social care sector I am very aware of the use of restrictive practices and how distressing this can be both for the individual involved and the person doing the restraining,” said James.

“Before writing the standards we talked to lots of people who had been restrained or used restraint and captured their lived experience. Restraint is used at times of extreme distress and it’s easy for the rights of the person involved to be forgotten.”
